I went to Liberty Elementary for the local Invention Convention and set up my poster and invention. I had time to walk around and look at what other ideas students had had. It was open to the public for an hour so I got to present my invention to a lot of different people. At 6:00, all students and parents, except for the kids that were being judged at that time, had to leave the gym. When my time was called I quickly walked to my stand and a judge made his way over to me. For those 10 minutes I was being judged I was asked many questions, such as “how did you come up with this idea?” or “what would you improve if you were to have had more time?” Soon my judging time was up and I left the gym. While I was waiting for the announcements to start, I did a few activities being offered to us. Shortly after everyone had been judged, we all gathered and were announced as participants. Then five kids were announced as the ‘Judges Choice’ but one person was to win the ‘Overall Champion’. Out of all those kids the judges picked me!! I was the overall champion!

Since it is the day before I go to Invention Convention I knew I had to finish everything. So I printed out everything and decided to put a background on my paragraphs and pictures. So I glued them down to construction paper and cut out the construction paper with my paragraphs. Then I printed out some pictures of the tools and materials I used to build my invention. I glued down all my paragraphs pictures and my diagram. Once everything was glued on, my poster was finally done!! But then I had the idea of making business cards. I got the idea from being in First Lego League because we made team business cards. I designed them and printed nine on a page and cut them out. Now I had a poster, my invention, and even business cards!!
After I glued my letters down and got my diagram done I started re- wording everything that I was putting on my poster. I then printed out some of the paragraphs I thought were ready to be cut out. Then I proofread them to make sure there wasn’t any mistakes. While coming home me and my mom had picked up pictures of my invention we had printed at Walgreens of me working. In the meantime most of my paragraphs didn’t have any mistakes, but there were a few that I had to reprint. I got a couple done but I still needed to finish the rest.
I made a whole new diagram at school today, and I printed it out. I also got to glue down all the letters onto my poster, so now all I have to do is type everything else on my checklist. It won’t take too long at all, soon I will have it all printed and glued onto my poster.
Due to the problem I had found I decided I might have to change something in my invention a bit. I got my new idea from when I was outside cleaning up my dogs poop with our pooper scooper. It made me think of the idea to scoop up the snow and have two sides come together to create the snowball, instead of using two different pieces. That meant I could create my invention with wood instead of a box, which would make the structure and base more stable. That’s the day I told my new idea to my parents and my dad said he would assist me in finding the materials I would need and help me to assemble my invention. I used 1 x 4 boards, door hinges, tennis balls, screws, and brad nails. First, we cut the boards to the length and width needed to fit 10 tennis balls. Next, my dad let me use his brad nailer and I nailed the boards together. Next, we screwed down some hinges on to the frame so the two parts would open and close. Then we layed out the tennis balls so they matched up top to bottom and screwed them down. Last, we nailed down the handles. I think it’s going to work great! Now, we just need some snow!
When I finished my diagram on the computer I asked my teacher to print it out and she gladly did it for me. My friend got my poster for me which I thanked her for. At first I had thought I was going to use cups for the part the snow went into, but they weren’t round enough. I then came up with the idea of using tennis balls instead. Unfortunately, I couldn’t cut the tennis balls by myself, so my teacher helped me with that. We cut apart 15 total tennis balls. To make sure they would work correctly we went outside and tested it. My idea involved laying the tennis balls flat inside of a box, but if I turned the box over to get the snowballs out they would just break apart. So there was my first problem I had to fix. Looks like I will have to make a design change.
For my poster I needed to make the letters for the name of my invention. Luckily some teachers at my school had printing letters that would cut them out precise and evenly. I still didn’t know what my layout was going to be for my poster, so I asked for some opinions from my fellow classmates and they really helped me out. Shortly after I knew where everything would go.
I had my idea, so I decided to start making my diagram at school. It took me awhile to figure out what shapes I was going to use and what to say on my labels. When I was finished with my diagram I wrote on my whiteboard what I thought I needed on my poster such as stating my problem and purpose. After writing all of my thoughts down I noted how people would have to use my invention.
